The Australian mint The Perth Mint continues its series of investment coins featuring motifs from the Eastern zodiac. This silver coin, weighing one-half of a troy ounce, is dedicated to the year 2027, which is the Year of the Goat.
The Eastern zodiac, also known as the Chinese zodiac, comprises twelve signs - twelve animals that represent twelve temperaments, each with both positive and negative traits. Unlike the traditional horoscope we are used to in Europe, each of these signs corresponds to a whole year, and once all the animals have taken their turn, the twelve-year cycle begins anew… The year 2027 is dedicated to the eighth animal of the Chinese zodiac - the Goat. Why the goat? Legend tells of the Jade Emperor, who ruled the heavens and was seeking someone to guard his palace. Twelve creatures vied for the Emperor’s favour - the rat, the ox, the tiger, the rabbit, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the goat, the monkey, the rooster, the dog and the pig. Their status in the palace was to be decided by a great race on land and water. After the seventh horse, three animals crossed the finish line at once - the goat, the monkey and the rooster, who had sailed across together on a raft. The Emperor was delighted to learn that these creatures had helped one another during the race. He then awarded the goat, which eats whatever it can find, eighth place as a reward for clearing the way through the undergrowth for its friends… People born under the influence of the goat tend to be sensitive, kind and empathetic - they avoid conflict and help others. However, their gentleness can easily turn into oversensitivity and pessimism - they take criticism badly and it is not hard to hurt their feelings…
As superstition states that three goats bring good luck, the reverse side of the silver coin features an old goat, a young goat and a kid in rugged mountainous terrain. The design is complemented by inscriptions in Chinese and English and the year 2027. The obverse side of the coin is entirely dedicated to the attributes of the issuer, Australia – it bears the name and portrait of King Charles III and the nominal value of 50 CENTS (AUD). The coin’s design is the work of Perth-based designer Natasha Muhl.
The silver coin represents a valuable investment as well as an attractive gift for example, to mark the birth of a child.
