Product description

Various years

Every major mint has its own investment coins, and Australia is no exception. The pride of the Australian mint, The Perth Mint, is the Kookaburra silver coin, weighing one troy ounce.

Kookaburra is the name given by the Indigenous Australians to the great kookaburra – an iconic bird that ranks among the best-known symbols of Australia. Should you come across one in the bush, you’ll recognise it straight away. This stocky bird is, in fact, the largest species of kingfisher and grows to almost half a metre in length. It is distinguished by its large head and strong beak, but even more characteristic is its call, which resembles human laughter. In reality, however, it is not laughing – it is actually marking its territory with its call… The kookaburra features in Aboriginal legends, children’s songs and on coins, which the mint in Perth began striking in 1990. These are investment coins, so they are issued in many variants. However, the variant struck from one troy ounce of pure silver stands out due to its limited mintage, which also makes it sought-after amongst collectors.

The design of the Australian coin changes regularly, as do its designers. However, the reverse side of the coin is always dominated by the kookaburra in various poses and settings. The obverse side of the coin features the issuer’s attributes, which means the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (AUD) and a portrait of the monarch.
