Product description

The series of a silver commemorative medals for the Czech Mint Art for Václav Havel gradually introduce the work of seven leading Czech artists. The sixth one is the Conquistador from the sculptor Jaroslav Róna.

Róna, growing up in the 70s was marked by normalization, which had made it difficult to approach the art education for him. The talented youngster, however was fearless and embraced an incredible amount of creative activities - he alternately inclined to a sculpting or painting, but he also became a ceramics maker, glass maker, graphic designer, stage designer, writer, theater actor and director. He also founded the legendary art group Tvrdohlaví (The Stubborn), whose members included among others Jiří David, an additional contributor to the series of Art for Václav Havel. The original pewter sculpture measuring 63 x 42 x 26 cm, which became the model for the medal, was created in 1990. The impulse for its creation was Róna’s expedition to Mexico, where he went immediately after the Velvet Revolution, which allowed him to freely travel abroad. "I've always been attracted to Hispanic culture and I elaborated a motive of the Conquistador - the faceless conqueror and in full armor,"  recalls the artist, who on the proposal of the commemorative medal collaborated with the academic sculptor Vladimír Oppl.

Whereas the obverse belongs to the Conquistador, the reverse is dedicated to the Prague Crossroad. This international spiritual and social center is located on the premises of St. Anne's Church, which Václav Havel liked very much. The proceeds from the sale of the commemorative medals, issued on the support of Dagmar and Václav Havel Foundation VIZE 97, goes to his recovery and support.

Once the first 200 numbered pieces out of the limited issue of 600 silver medals will be sold out, the rest of the issue will be released up for sale.
