Product description

At an altitude of 1,061 meters above sea level  an exceptional lookout tower rises above the forested ridge of the Krkonoše Mountains. Thanks to its ideal location, visitors are given superb views of the natural wonders of our land. That’s why the Žalý Lookout Tower has not only earned the admiration of tourists, but also a new issue from the popular series of Lookout Towers from the Czech Mint.

The structure was built in 1836 by Count Jan Nepomuk František Harrach. The original wooden construction was replaced in 1889 with a 15-meter high metal tower and a year later a wooden lookout restaurant was added which existed until 1943. Already at that time, the lookout tower deservedly caught the attention of tourists. In 1892, the tower again changed its form and after reconstruction, the 18-meter high structure became the only stone lookout tower in the Krkonoše Mountains. On a clear day, you can see the entire panorama of the Krkonoše range, part of the Jizera and Orel Mountains and part of Česky ráj. The excellent visibility is one of the reasons why the tower is one of the most visited structures of its type in the CR.

The Žalý Lookout Tower is another coin in the series of the Czech Mint which thematically joins the previously issued medals presenting the Babylon and Štěpánka Towers and the Joseph Tower on Klet. The creator of this newest issue is Czech medal maker MgA. Jan Hásek. The obverse is decorated with a realistic relief of the Žalý Lookout Tower with the date of its construction and altitude. The reverse depicts the endless horizons offered to those who visit the site. The composition is rounded out with the geographical names of Benecko, Krkonoše, Herlíkovice and Přední Žalý. At first glance it is another masterpiece of artisan worked silver in exceptional proof quality, which will become the highlight of your rare collections - this issue is limited to 1,000 pieces.
