Product description

The silver Slovak euro coin was minted in proof quality to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Eva Siracká, an exceptional physician and scientist who influenced not only Slovak medicine but also civil society as a whole.

She spent her childhood in a family that emphasized education and public service. Her father was a judge, but her deep sense of helping others led her to study medicine. As a medical student, she came into contact with oncology, which became her life’s mission. When she joined the radiology department at the St. Elizabeth Cancer Institute in Bratislava, she became the first woman in Slovakia to specialize in radiation therapy. Her star in the field rose rapidly from that point on. She became a pioneer in oncological radiology and radiobiology, as well as a member of numerous national and international societies. When she founded the League Against Cancer in her homeland, Czechoslovakia became the first country in the Eastern Bloc to achieve such a feat. “The greatest achievement of the LPR was that we came to the attention of major international organizations. We broke the taboo that had persisted until then—not to speak of, hear about, or see cancer,” said Eva Siracká, who was renowned not only for her expertise but also for her empathy. She knew how to listen to patients, understood their pain, and grasped the physical, psychological, and social consequences of cancer. She passed away at the age of 96, but her legacy lives on—for example, in the form of the League Against Cancer’s charity fundraiser known as Daffodil Day…

The reverse side of the coin features a faithful portrait of Eva Siracká, accompanied by her name, the years of her life 1926–2023, and the coin’s nominal value of 10 EURO. The obverse side is dominated by a hand holding a yellow daffodil. In the background behind her stands out a stylized open palm surrounded by X-rays. The obverse composition is completed by the national coat of arms and the inscription SLOVENSKO, 2026. All of this is the work of medalist Mgr. art. Martin Sabol.

The coin was minted by the Kremnica Mint and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
