Product description
The silver coin with a nominal value of 10 EUR was minted in quality standard on the occasion of the 220th anniversary of Slovak settlement of Kovačice.
Although the town of Kovačica is located in the north of Serbia, it is home to many Slovaks. They came here in 1802 to colonise the area vacated after the departure of the Turks. Religious reasons also led them to the so-called Lower Country - in most cases they were Protestants who were still persecuted. "Get out of here! Away from that cursed place where the land cannot feed you, where they skin you, where we live worse than cattle or dogs... Away from here, anywhere, just away... Far, very far, as far away as possible, even to the end of the world..." Vojvodina, where the Slovaks settled, was very sparsely populated and abounded in fertile land for cultivation. The Habsburgs encouraged the migration because they needed to continually increase agricultural production while guarding the border with the Ottoman Empire. Land and building materials were provided to the frontiersmen in exchange for the work they did... Today, Kovačica is home to the world's most active and largest group of Slovaks living abroad. They have preserved old traditions and customs even after two centuries, but they have also created new ones. The Serbian town has been a centre of naive art for over fifty years.
The medal maker Karol Ličko dedicated the obverse side of the coin to the family of a Slovak farmer - on his journey from Upper Country to Lower Country he is accompanied by a horse and a woman and her daughter, who are riding on a ladder truck. The composition of the obverse side is completed by a rook well, the inscription SLOVENSKO 2022, the nominal value of 10 EURO and the Slovak national emblem. The life story of the Slovak emigrants continues on the reverse side of the coin. Peasant women in folk costume brings refreshments to men and women threshing grain. The tower of the Slovak Evangelical Church can be seen in the background. The reverse relief is completed by the inscription SLOVÁCI V KOVAČICI (SLOVAKS IN KOVAČICA) and the annual years 1802-2022.
The coin was minted by the Slovak Mint of Mincovňa Kremnica and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
