Product description

Another issue from the series of commemorative euro coins dedicated to Slovak fauna, commemorates the Capercaillie.

The Capercaillie is a large burrowing bird of the grouse family. Although it is stocky and sedentary, it is not a bad flyer. It can make seasonal flights of several kilometres between breeding and wintering grounds. Its home is Eurasia, where it inhabits a vast area ranging from the Spanish Pyrenees to Russian Siberia. It is most at home in old coniferous or mixed natural forests with a rich undergrowth. These provide plenty of food in the form of needles, buds and blueberries. Spruce monocultures, which have spread with the advent of modern forestry, do not suit it and the species is therefore rapidly disappearing from the countrysid. In Slovakia, the population is showing a significant decline... Capercaillie is also very sensitive to disturbance. Logging and tourism are particularly disturbing during wintering and during the flow, when males are looking for mates. During courtship rituals, roosters strut and display specific acoustic signals. This is how the ruffed grouse got its species name. When it makes a low-frequency sound, it goes temporarily deaf to avoid damaging its hearing.

The reverse side of the coin, designed by the medal maker Tomáš Lamač, DiS., is dominated by a Capercaillie sitting on a fir branch and squawking. The texts bear the Slovak and Latin names of the species: HUCHÁŇ HÔRNY - TETRAO UROGALLUS. The obverse side of the coin then presents a pair of Capercaillie - a rooster and a hen, which at first glance are distinctly different. In the relief of the coin you will also find the Slovak national emblem, the inscription SLOVAKIA, the year of issue 2024 and the nominal value of 5 EURO.

The base metal commemorative coin was minted by Mincovňa Kremnica and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
