A gold coin with a nominal value of 100 euro was minted to mark the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács.
A fateful battle took place near the Hungarian town of Mohács in 1526. On one side stood a Muslim army led by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I the Magnificent. Opposing him was a Christian coalition led by Louis Jagiellon. From the perspective of this King of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia, the situation was desperate and Europe was divided, mired in its petty internal disputes, and Louis could find little help in his fight against Muslim expansion. In contrast, Suleiman’s men were united, disciplined and twice as numerous. Nevertheless, the desperate Christians decided to fight. Their resolve, however, proved ultimately in vain – the brief battle ended in a horrific massacre of European soldiers and a frantic flight by those who survived. The plain of Mohács, which had been transformed into a deadly quagmire by heavy rain, even swallowed up King Louis himself. This crushing defeat altered the course of European history – the Muslims began to conquer Hungarian territory and the Habsburg dynasty came to power for hundreds of years…
The medallist Mária Poldaufová has dedicated the reverse side of the coin to a scene from the chaos of battle - the Ottoman cavalry decimating the Hungarian infantry. The striking relief also features the banners of both opposing sides, the muddy terrain and the text BATTLE OF MOHAČ 1526. The obverse side of the coin features a double portrait of Suleiman I and Louis Jagiellon. The obverse composition is completed by the horse on which the Hungarian monarch perished, the inscription SLOVENSKO 2026, the nominal value 100 EURO and the Slovak national coat of arms.
The coin was struck by the Kremnica Mint and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
