If you were asked to name several things connected with your childhood, at least one of the bedtime stories characters created by Zdeněk Smetana would most certainly rank among them. Rákosníček, Křemílek and Vochomůrka, or Malá čarodějnice (Little witch) – have for decades helped children to fall asleep. Czech Mint decided to dedicate an entire collector series of tokens made of Nordic Gold alloy to the marvellous work of Zdeněk Smetana. The fourth token in the series shows two inseparable dog friends: Štaflík and Špagetka. The 26 bedtime stories cycle of the same name was created by Smetana in 1971 for Czech TV.

On the obverse side of the token we can see both dog friends and their names, the reverse features a display of Smetana’s animated characters and the inscription: POHÁDKY ZDEŇKA SMETANY (Fairy Tales of Zdeněk Smetana). The token reminds us of the impish bedtime stories and the great legacy of Smetana’s art. The packaging of the token is illustrated with pictures from the bedtime stories and it can serve as a lovely gift for the youngest.
