Product description
Another Prague landmark that appears on the Czech Mint's mini gold coin set in a replica of a historical postcard is Vyšehrad.
Vyšehrad is a memorable place, which according to legend was founded by the mythical Prince Krok and where the first Czech king Vratislaus II. had a residence. However, the rock above the Vltava River was not only the seat of secular power, but also of spiritual life, as evidenced by the monumental Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. The church, which was originally an early Romanesque basilica, has been rebuilt repeatedly throughout history - in Gothic, Baroque and Neo-Gothic styles. Vratislaus II founded the royal collegiate chapter, which still cares for Vyšehrad and its Christian and cultural traditions. Vyšehrad's heritage with its magnificent views attracts crowds of visitors, therefore , it is presented in postcard art. “The three-colour postcard, which served as a template for the coin packaging, draws attention to the Church of St. Peter and Paul in its New Gothic reconstruction form from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as Prague's oldest rotunda, St. Martin's,“ says postcard expert Pavel Vursta.
The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of medal maker Lucie Marková, is dominated by the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul surrounded by ornaments inspired by the decoration of the Vyšehrad church. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its necessary elements - the national emblem, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2023.
The issue, which will delight numismatists and philocartists, is an original and affordable collector's piece as well as an attractive regional gift.
