Gold half-ounce medal Legends of the Czech castles - Crazy fisherwoman on Bitov castle proof
Legends of the Czech castles
The Czech Mint's series entitled Legends of Czech
Castles is full of myths, mysteries, and fairy tales. The latest commemorative
medal made of pure gold tells the story of the mad fisherwoman of Bítov.
Bítov Castle towers above the
confluence of the Želetavka and Dyje rivers, but there used to be a lake below the castle. The legend of a fisherwoman who lived in a hut on its
shore tells the story. Her life was hard, and she had only one joy in the
world—her beloved daughter. But she
lost her too when one day, while playing, the girl slipped, fell from a rock,
and drowned. The lake washed up her
lifeless body, and the fisherwoman went
insane. The broken woman adored cats,
which were attracted to the hut by the smell of freshly caught fish. The
fisherwoman fed them, protected them from the cold, and her pack quickly grew.
However, the cats made a lot of noise,
which did not like the lord of the
castle, who had taken his daughter
out for a boat ride. The girl was frightened by the cats' screams, and her
angry father grabbed his bow and killed the cats. The fisherwoman drove him away with her scream and threatened revenge. To be on the safe
side, the nobleman forbade his daughter from approaching the lake, but she
disobeyed him, and when he left for battle, she went for a walk. The mad
fisherwoman was already waiting for her, and as soon as she had the
opportunity, she threw her off the cliff
into the depths. Upon returning home, the lord of Bítov searched in vain
for his daughter. He found her lifeless body on the shore of the lake, where he
heard a deranged laugh: "I took your daughter for the cats!" The
desperate man cried out a curse, and at that moment, the fisherwoman
disappeared along with the entire lake...
The obverse side of the commemorative medal, which is the work of academic sculptor MajkaWichnerová, depicts the mad fisherwoman and the drowned girl – perhaps her daughter, perhaps the daughter of the lord of the castle. The atmosphere is completed by a fishing net, and in the background you can also see a fisherman's hut with two cats. The reverse side is dominated by a view of Bítov Castle.
The collector's series presented a total of six castle stories. The issue limit counts only 100 pieces numbered on the edge.
