Product description
A native from Wadowice in Poland, an athlete, climber, poet, playwright, brilliant cleric and the first Slavic pope in history - all this was Karol Józef Wojtyła, who was renamed as John Paul II. The Czech Mint issued a majestic gold coin the weight of which is inspired by the historic ten-ducat to the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth.
John Paul II. differed significantly from most of the popes who sat on the Holy See before him. He had a great feeling for human freedom, which resulted from his personal experience with Nazism and Communism. While he tried to escape the first of the great evils of the 20th century, he did not hesitate to confront the second openly - he gradually became one of the greatest defenders of human rights and freedoms and made a significant contribution to the Fall of the Iron Curtain. The favour of John Paul II. was unseen throughout Christian society, and eventually led to his canonization. The pope impressed conservative believers with his maturity of opinion and adherence to seemingly obsolete dogmas. His commonness, spontaneous behavior, and ability to speak to people again opened the church to young people.
The reverse side of the coin was dedicated by the medal maker MgA. Josef Oplištil to the portrait of a charismatic pope with a smile on his face. The name JOHN PAUL II supplemented with the life years 1920–2005 is placed in the inscription. Since the coins are issued with a foreign license of the island of Niue, the obverse side bears the necessary attributes of this issuer - the name and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 500 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of the issue 2020. The composition of the obverse side is supplemented with religious symbolism - Christ's monogram Chi-Ro, which is one of the oldest and most widespread Christian characters, and the Latin motto of John Paul II. TOTUS TUUS, which is a fragment of prayer to the Mother of God and means "all Yours."
The limited schedule of issuance of the coin counts only 50 pieces.
