Product description

The Battle of Lipany was a decisive event in the history of our country. This tragic end of the Hussite Wars is commemorated by a silver commemorative medal of the Czech Mint.

The Bohemian lands were at the height of their glory in the 14th century. Education and culture flourished and Prague became the centre of Europe. But then came the 15th century and with it the Hussite Wars, which brought the glorious kingdom to the brink of destruction. Crusades poured into the rebellious country from outside, but their rampage was nothing compared to fifteen years of internal turmoil. The last and decisive battle of the protracted fratricidal conflict took place on Sunday, May 30, 1434, near the central Bohemian village of Lipany. On one side stood the field armies of the Hussite radicals - the Taborites and the Orphans. They were opposed by an alliance of moderate Caliphs and Catholics. Although the radical wing had a better position, it was overwhelmingly defeated. For, believing in the pretended retreat of the enemy, it opened a chariot wall to attack, and unwittingly let the lurking cavalry of the alliance into its midst. Among the hundreds of dead was the leader of the radicals himself, Prokop Holý - the most influential Hussite politician who was the informal head of the whole of revolutionary Bohemia. Nor were the Radical prisoners spared, whom the victors decided to burn en masse. The Battle of Lipany was bloody and unrelenting, but it ultimately set the kingdom on the path to peace. In the following years, the affairs of the country, where Catholics and Hussites lived side by side on equal terms, were decided by joint election, and the culmination of this establishment was an unprecedented thing - the election of a king...

Medal maker Mgr. Art. Miroslav Hric, Art. D., was inspired by the drawing of Mikoláš Alš when creating the obverse side of the medal and depicted Prokop Holý in relief at the head of the Hussite mission. The inscription states BITVA U LIPAN – 30. 5. 1434 (BATTLE OF LIPANY - 30 May 1434). The reverse side of the medal then presents Hussite radicals firing at the cavalry of the enemy alliance from a chariot wall.

A large medal pays tribute to the great battle - the weight of the silver coinage is ten troy ounces.
