Product description

Silver coin featuring the legendary Germanic warrior Arminius is both a unique work of art and a collector’s rarity.

The power of the Roman Empire knew no bounds from Britain in the north to Egypt in the south, from Hispania in the west to Babylonia in the east. Its expansion also continued across the wild Germania, full of warring tribes. One of these was the Cherusci. They were ruled by Chief Segimer, who sent his son Arminius to Rome. It is unclear whether he was part of a diplomatic mission or was taken hostage to ensure the obedience of his fellow tribesmen, but whatever the case, he assimilated perfectly with the Romans. He delved into the secrets of their politics and military affairs, obtained Roman citizenship, and became a commander, who fought on the Balkan Peninsula in the name of the emperor. The Romans valued his bravery and intelligence, which they believed far surpassed that of an “ordinary barbarian.” When Arminius returned to his homeland, he was given a new task to convince the Germanic tribes that it was in their best interest to submit to Rome. Arminius, however, did the exact opposite and roused the Germanic tribes to revolt. The Romans could not imagine that anyone who had come to know their civilization could return to the old ways, and this arrogance proved to be their undoing. Arminius, in fact, used everything they had taught him against them. In the year 9 AD, he led a combined army of the Cherusci, the Marci, the Bructeri, and the Chatti, which ambushed and crushed the core of the Roman forces in the Teutoburg Forest. The Romans lost three legions, a full tenth of their military strength and the provincial governor Varus himself was killed. Although Rome retaliated against Arminius, it never recovered from the defeat and was forced to abandon its dreams of conquering Germania…

The reverse side of the coin depicts Arminius with a sword in his fist. The commander is surrounded by Roman legionaries, who are about to be swallowed up by the Teutoburg Forest. The obverse side is dedicated to a vast array of weapons, revealing that the coin is part of a series honoring legendary warriors. Since the coin is issued with license by a foreign issuer, the island of Niue, its obverse side also bears the necessary attributes: the national coat of arms, the nominal value of FIVE DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue 2026. All of this stands out in high relief, enhanced by a patina and gold plating.

The mintage of this coin by T&S Coin is limited to just 500 pieces.
