Product description

The silver coin of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 200 CZK, which is minted in quality standard, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the start of regular broadcasting of Czechoslovak Radio.

Experiments with radio broadcasting were already taking place on Czechoslovak territory before the First World War. The first radio programme, which consisted of words and music, was broadcast on 28 October 1919 from the radio telegraph station at the Petřín tower. A regular radio broadcast started in Kbely four years later, on 18 May 1923. Czechoslovakia was only the second country in Europe after Great Britain to achieve such a feat, but the very first day was a real test for our pioneers. It was to be broadcast from the transmitter building in Kbely, but the performers could not fit, so they were banished to a scout tent. The grass was covered with a carpet, on which was modest equipment - a piano, two chairs and a microphone. There were some problems with the place, bad weather - the wind was leaning against the tent and a heavy downpour had started. The carpet got soaked with water and the artists who had prepared a musical performance for the audience had to be ready to hold the structure to prevent it from flying away. In addition, a soaked dog came to take shelter in the tent and enriched the premiere programme with barking. In spite of all the difficulties, a new era had begun - the Czechoslovaks did not have to get their information only from the newspapers. The daily broadcasts developed intensively, and the Radiojournal brought, for example, news, weather forecasts and radio plays.

The design of Mgr. Marie Šeborová won the art competition of the Czech National Bank. The expert committee particularly appreciated the composition of the obverse side, which consists of a radio microphone and broadcasting masts. The reverse side presents a historical tent and the logo of Czechoslovak Radio.

All Czech coins - both commemorative and circulation - are produced at the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou.
