Josef Suk the Elder was a great lyricist of Czech music and a master of orchestral composition. His work is not extensive, however, it has unique features. Initially, he lyricised the influence of Antonín Dvořák in a distinctive way. In the late Romantic era he became famous as a composer of popular works, including the Serenade, the Love Song and the music for the fairy tale Radúz and Mahulena. However, tragic family events triggered an artistic transformation in him. First of all, he lost his teacher and father-in-law Antonín Dvořák, and soon afterwards his beloved wife Otilia. Therefore, he turned to new means of expression, which he transformed into a demanding progressive style. The meditative works Asrael, Fairy Tale of Summer, Maturation and Epilogue made him the founder of 20th century Czech musical modernism. Moreover, Josef Suk was also a first-class violinist - he played four thousand concerts around the world with the Czech Quartet that he founded.
