Product description
Silver coin of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 200 CZK, boasting the highest proof quality, is being issued to mark the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the Venus of Věstonice.
The earliest form of human society, which emerged in the Stone Age, was gynecocracy – or rule by women. Tangible evidence that women were objects of sacred reverence can be found in prehistoric statuettes, including the famous Venus of Věstonice. The nearly 30,000-year-old figurine, which was found in 1925 during archaeological excavations in southern Moravia, is shaped like a naked woman with curvy shapes. Her wide hips, a large bust, and large buttocks represent the prehistoric ideal of beauty and symbolize a strong and healthy mother who is capable of giving birth to future hunters and strengthening her tribe... This small memento of mammoth hunters is the oldest known piece of fired clay in the world and thus also evidence of the very beginnings of pottery. No wonder it is one of the most valuable Czech museum exhibits, whose cultural and historical value is immeasurable.
The design by academic sculptor Majka Wichnerová won the Czech National Bank's art competition. The expert committee praised the "imaginative placement of the Venus of Věstonice in the background of the Pálava Hills on both sides of the design." On the reverse side, you will find mammoths, which are typical of the period and culture.
