Product description
Silver coin of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 200 CZK, minted in standard quality, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the Venus of Věstonice.
An archaeological survey took place in southern Moravia in 1925. In an area inhabited by prehistoric people thirty thousand years ago, mammoth bones, parts of tools, the grave of a crouched woman, and fragments of various figurines were found. However, one find surpassed all the others. Josef Seidl and Emanuel Dania, who were working under the direction of Karel Absolon, found two fragments among the ashes and charcoal that did not seem to belong together. However, when the archaeologists put them together, they saw a statue of a naked woman with voluptuous curves. Although small, measuring only 11.5 centimeters, its significance was enormous. The discovery of the Venus of Věstonice rewrote the history of prehistoric art. This tiny memento of mammoth hunters is the oldest known piece of fired clay in the world, and thus evidence of the very beginnings of pottery. The cultural and historical value of one of the most precious Czech museum exhibits is incalculable...
The design by academic sculptor Majka Wichnerová won the Czech National Bank's art competition. The expert committee praised the "imaginative placement of the Venus of Věstonice in the backgrounf of the Pálava Hills on both sides of the design." On the reverse side, you will find mammoths, which are typical of the period and culture.
