Journey Around the World
The Czech Mint's series of silver coins entitled Journey Around the World is a guide to the most visited cities on the planet. The fourth issue takes you to Hong Kong.
Hongkong, once the jewel of the British colonial empire and an autonomous administrative region of the People's Republic of China since 1997, is a city of contrasts, where seemingly irreconcilable opposites coexist. The future meets the past. Tradition meets progress. Wealth and poverty. Europe and Asia. Capitalism and communism... Ultra-modern skyscrapers stand next to ancient temples. Seemingly endless residential buildings give way to untouched nature reserves. Docks alternate with rice fields. Subtropical beaches lie in the shadow of kilometer-high mountains. Dangerous alleys are just a stone's throw away from the headquarters of the world's largest banks... All this in a very small area. 7,500,000 people live in a rugged area of 1,100 square kilometers, consisting of Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories, and over two hundred smaller islands. Every year, tens of millions of people visit one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Some come here for work – after all, Hong Kong is one of the world's major economic centers. Others come here for entertainment – shopping,, cuisine with thousands of flavors, and ancient Chinese wisdom...
The reverse side of the coin, designed by medal maker Jiří Hanuš, DiS., is dominated by a gigantic statue of the Big Buddha in Po Lin Monastery. This religious symbol is contrasted by Hong Kong's skyscrapers, led by the Bank of China Tower. The relief also features typical junks, and the atmosphere of the glittering metropolis is completed by neon signs. The contrast between the individual elements is enhanced by patina and colored enamels. The obverse, designed by Asamat Baltaev, DiS., which is common to the entire series of travel coins, features the flags and landmarks of world capitals such as Prague, London, Hong Kong, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro, and New York. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with a foreign licence from the island of Niue, they also bear its national emblem, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2025.
The coins in the Around the World series weigh three troy ounces – a first in the history of the Czech Mint. The package includes a picture brochure.
