Mythological figures

The seventh silver coin from the Czech Mint's series entitled Mythological Figures depicts a proud dwarf.

Dwarfs may not have grown very tall, but they are strong, and long-lived. Their tenacious bodies make them unbeatable miners, stonecutters, and metalworkers. In the depths of the earth, they dig not only ordinary tunnels, but entire kingdoms that are a sight to behold. They adore stone, iron, silver, gold, and precious stones. From the metals they mine, they craft breathtaking jewelry and magical weapons, which they then use in endless wars against hordes of enemies. Like the rocks they live in, dwarves are hard and unyielding. They are resistant to disease and evil magic, but they have a tendency toward greed and jealousy. They jealously guard their culture, their secrets, and their massive beards, and they can be unbearably stubborn, proud, and distrustful toward strangers... This is how people imagine mythical dwarves today, mainly because of J. R. R. Tolkien's epic novel The Lord of the Rings. The British writer, who is considered the father of fantasy literature, based his work on Norse mythology. The ancient Vikings, for example, believed that it was dwarves who forged the legendary Thor's hammer. However, many other cultures were also familiar with various races of small creatures, such as elves, goblins, and gnomes. They were encountered by the ancient Greeks, Celts, and Native Americans...

The reverse side of the coin, designed by medal maker Roman Shamilyan, depicts a dwarf as we know from fairy tales and fantasy – with a majestic beard, thick eyebrows, and a high forehead. As the license to issue commemorative coins of the Czech Mint is provided by the Pacific island of Niue, the obverse side bears its national emblem, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue, 2025. These essential attributes are surrounded by elemental nature – rocks, clouds, trees and waves. The details of the relief are highlighted by patina.

The complete twelve-piece collection of coins featuring characters from the realm of myths, legends, and fantasy can be stored in a collector's album, which is also available in our offer.
