Slovak coin 2 EUR 2026 - 50th anniv. of the victory of Czechoslovakia at the European Footbal stand

To mark the 50th anniversary of Czechoslovakia’s victory at the 1976 European Football Championship, a Slovak euro coin is being issued, minted in the highest standard quality.

The 1976 European Football Championship was held in Belgrade, which was the capital of what was then Yugoslavia. There were several favorites, but few would have predicted that the Czechoslovaks would provide some of the most memorable moments in world soccer. Their run was unstoppable - they eliminated the Soviets in the quarterfinals, defeated the Dutch in the semifinals, and overcame the favored West German team in the final. Czechoslovakia’s victory over the reigning world and European champions then became a genuine sensation. The key moment was Antonín Panenka’s “Vršovice chip” on the decisive penalty kick, but we must not forget that this famous triumph was the result of a collective effort by the team consisting of Ivo Viktor, Alexander Vencel, Pavol Michalík, Karol Dobiaš, Jozef Čapkovič, Anton Ondruš, Ján Pivarník, Ladislav Jurkemik, Koloman Gögh, Pavol Biroš, Antonín Panenka, Jozef Móder, Jaroslav Pollák, Dušan Herda, František Veselý, Ján Švehlík, František Štambacher, Marián Masný, Zdeněk Nehoda, and Dušan Galis.

The obverse side of the coin, designed by medalist Matěj Hanuš, depicts a football player surrounded by a laurel wreath. The inscriptions bears SLOVENSKO – 2026 – MAJSTRI EURÓPY 1976 (SLOVAKIA – 2026 – EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS 1976). The reverse side features all the elements of a valid coin with a nominal value of 2 EUR.

The commemorative coin, made of base metals, was minted by the Kremnica Mint and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
