The Mayans, the original inhabitants of Central America, created an incredibly advanced civilization with elaborated script, precise calendars and advanced mathematics, but they were no strangers to ritual human sacrifice. The most sacred site of their empire was the city of Chichén Itzá on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. It flourished most in the 10th century AD, when it became a cultural, religious, commercial and military centre. It was home to 35,000 inhabitants, but around 1200, they disappeared overnight. Why? It's possible they exhausted their natural resources or were struck by a natural disaster. The magnificent metropolis was swallowed by the forest for 300 years, and when the Spanish conquerors arrived in the 16th century, they completed destruction. They looted temples, destroyed manuscripts, and we can only guess what really led to the decline of a once great civilisation... But some of the monuments in the ruins of Chichén Itzá have survived to this day - natural wells, an observatory, playgrounds, temples and the breathtaking pyramid of Kukulkan dedicated to the serpent god. The symmetrical structure is astonishing in its sophistication. It is square in plan, with individual walls facing the four cardinal points. Each of the four staircases, which rise at a 45-degree angle, has 91 steps. At the top, at a height of 24 metres, there is a platform which forms the 365th step, corresponding to the number of days in the Mayan year. The Mayan knowledge of astronomy is evidenced by the magical effect that occurs at sunset on the days of the spring and autumn equinox. The statues cast a shadow that looks like a snake slithering down the stairs to the snake's head carved into the base of the structure…
The reverse side of each coin, which is the work of medal maker Ludmila Kracíková, DiS., presents the actual form of the Pyramid of Kukulkan, supplemented with the inscription CHICHÉN ITZÁ. All the new Seven Wonders of the World - the Brazilian statue of Christ the Saviour, the Jordanian rock city of Petra, the Mayan city of Chichén Itzá in Mexico, the Roman Colosseum, the Indian monument of the Taj Mahal, the Inca seat of Machu Picchu in Peru and the Great Wall of China appear on the obverse side, which is common to the entire series. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign license of the island of Niue, they also bear its national emblem, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2024 on the obverse side.
Ten identical coins are sealed in special packaging. This is perforated so that it can be conveniently divided into ten parts if necessary.
