The Czech Mint introduces the new THINCUSE™ technology, making gold accessible to everyone

----------

Gold is not only valuable, rare, and beautiful, but also exceptionally malleable. Although it sounds unbelievable, a single troy ounce can be hammered into a sheet with an area of 10 square metres. We haven’t gone quite that far at the Czech Mint, but we have nevertheless pushed the boundaries of coinage once again.

We have struck a coin from 999.9/1000 fine gold weighing a mere 1/200 of a troy ounce – that is 0.156 grams. Even with such a low weight, we managed to achieve a remarkable diameter of 16 millimetres, making the coin exceptionally thin. At first glance, however, it captivates with its striking relief, dominated by the Czech lion – the traditional heraldic beast of the Czech Republic, made famous worldwide not only by the deeds of Czech kings but also by the Czech Mint’s popular bullion coins.

How did we achieve such a vivid 3D relief on a blank with a thickness of only 40 micrometres – or 0.04 millimetres?? By utilizing THINCUSE™ technology, which we have been developing in Jablonec nad Nisou since 2021. The name of this original Czech technology was created by combining two English words—THIN and INCUSE.

So-called incuse coins differ from traditional coins in that their design is sunken on one side. The first such coins appeared as far back as antiquity, but in the 21st century they are produced only rarely and are thus considered a technological and artistic rarity. The brand-new Czech Lion coin is exactly that. It is an authentic coin mintage – not an imitation or gold-plated plastic, which some manufacturers use for such low weights.

“No one mints as many incuse products as the Czech Mint. We dare say that in this field, which we have been developing for a long time, we are the best. The latest result of our efforts is this unique coin, which you won’t find anywhere else on the market. We’re proud of our purely Czech technology, which is why we’ve trademarked it. In the future, we plan to offer it to our corporate clients as part of custom minting services, reveals Stanislav Bachtík, Production Director of the Czech Mint.

When you say THINCUSE™ out loud, the next word you hear is THINK. At the Czech Mint, we’re constantly thinking about how to make gold – whose price has risen significantly in recent years – more accessible. With the bullion coin, which weighs 1/200 of a troy ounce, we’ve succeeded. The price per coin was set so that it would not exceed CZK 1,000 — approximately € 40 – and it is exempt from VAT.

“Gold has always been a symbol of value. The problem is that for a long time, not everyone could afford it. That has just changed. With us, investors can build value gradually, without large upfront costs, says Michal Voborník, CEO of the Czech Mint.

Thanks to the favourable price, investors can easily control how much money they invest in precious metals. But that’s not all. Unlike all previous Czech Lions, the mintage is unlimited. This ensures that our bullion coin will be available to every interested buyer – both at home and abroad, where the trend of low weights is on the rise…

----------

Both sides of the coin feature the Czech lion – a realistically depicted national symbol wearing the Crown of St. Wenceslas. The lion is the work of experienced medal maker Vojtěch Dostál, DiS. Since the coins of the Czech Mint are issued under license from a foreign issuer, the island of Niue, their obverse side bears its necessary attributes – the coat of arms, the face value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD), and the year of issue, 2026.
