Product description

The five-year cycle of the Czech National Bank, dedicated to urban conservation areas in the Czech Republic, presents its tenth issue. The gold coin with a nominal value of 5000 CZK, minted in quality standard, commemorates the beauty of Tábor.

In 1420, followers of the ideas of Master Jan Hus founded a town in southern Bohemia where they could live not according to worldly laws, but exclusively according to God's laws. This village was named Tábor after the biblical mountain of the same name located in the Holy Land. It is interesting to note that the Hussite name became a common term for military camps. Tábor was a military fortress – the place from where the Hussites led their victorious campaigns until they were defeated in the Battle of Lipany. Fortunately, a peace treaty was signed between the Tábor settlers and their opponent, Sigismund of Luxembourg, and the settlement was thus preserved for future generations. In addition, it was granted the status of a royal town. When Tábor submitted to George of Poděbrady, it became a real town. In the 16th century, most of the town houses fell victim to fires, but this only strengthened the building efforts and Tábor was finally transformed into a stone town. In the 17th century, it was plundered by the Swedish army. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, it ceased to be a fortress, and so the fortification system was demolished and many valuable buildings were destroyed. Despite this, in 1961, the historic centre of Tábor became an urban conservation area. The dense network of winding streets still bears witness to the military character of the town. Among the preserved Gothic gems are the old town hall and the Church of the Transfiguration of Our Lord...

The design by the duo of medal designers Tereza Vlčková and MgA. Josef Oplištil won the Czech National Bank's art competition. The expert committee praised the elaborated collage of the most important monuments of the Tábor conservation area – on the obverse side you will find Ctibor's and Škoch's houses, and on the reverse side there is the old town hall and two burgher houses. All this is connected by sgraffito plaster in the background.

The gold coins from the Czech National Bank's ten-part series can be stored in a wooden collector's case, which is also available in the offer of the Czech Mint.
