Set of circulation coins 2026 Hurvínek - 100th anniversary stand

The Czech Mint, in cooperation with the Czech National Bank, regularly issues various sets of circulation coins. In 2026, one such set commemorates 100 years since the birth of a wooden boy named Hurvínek.

It was 1926 when woodcarver Gustav Nosek placed a smaller and technically more sophisticated version of his popular puppet Mr. Spejbl next to the original. "You shouldn't have done that. What am I supposed to do with it now?" muttered puppeteer Josef Skupa, who already used the established puppet Kašpárek alongside Spejbl. On May 2, however, he introduced the new character on stage, and success was instant. Just three days later, he dedicated a whole act to him! All that was missing was a name. At first, he was called Spejblátko, but that didn't catch on. Then theater director Karel Koval wished the puppet "three cheers" and the name Hurvínek was born. However, an alternative version of the story claims that the originator of the unusual name was Skupa's friend, the painter Doležal, who did not like the puppet and commented on it with the words: "That's a complete, excuse my language, whore." Where does the truth lie? We will probably never know – after all, a whole century has passed. During that time, Hurvínek has not aged, but he has changed a little. He was originally thinner and had a long nose. He only became plump later, but from the very beginning he knew how to roll his eyes, which still earns him well-deserved applause from audiences today...

The set of circulation coins contains all valid metal coins with denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 CZK and the year 2026 stamped on them, issued by the Czech National Bank and produced by the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou. The six coins, which have not been in circulation, are accompanied by a colored commemorative token designed by medalist Ludmila Kracíková, DiS. It features not only Hurvínek, but also his father Spejbl and his friends Mánička and Žeryk.
