Legends of the Czech castles
The series of the Czech Mint entitled Legends of Czech Castles is full of myths, mysteries and fairy tales. The fourth commemorative medal made of pure silver commemorates the legend of the Owl Princess at Sovinec.
Durma, who lived near Sovinec castle, was an evil witch. Those who displeased her fought the evil one. The local lord, who did not return her love, was convinced of this and was cursed by the goddess out of revenge. From then on, he could only be human in the cave inside Owl Rock that towered within sight of the castle. Whenever he left this cold abode, he was transformed into a howl. He had gained dominion over all the owls in the region, but he was still lonely. For even in his animal form he retained the human mind and feeling - the need for a kind touch and a kind word. Loneliness was the true curse of the Owl King... One day, however, a girl wandered into the cave and picked blueberries in the woods. When she saw a man surrounded by owls, she suddenly understood who she was dealing with. They fell in love at first sight and the girl decided to stay in the cave. But even fairy-tale love couldn't break the evil spell. From time to time, the inhabitants of the undergarden would see a strange sight - a beauty with a large howl on her shoulder would come to them asking for food. People called her the Owl princess and were happy to give her gifts - they appreciated love that overcomes all hardships. Eventually, she overcame even death. When the Owl King and the Owl Princess died, they did not go on forever. If you're lucky, you'll meet them on the slopes of Owl Rock or in the castle courtyard...
The obverse side of the commemorative medal, the work of academic sculptor Majka Wichnerová, presents the Owl Princess holding a rose in one hand and carrying an owl in the other. The stars in the night sky illuminate the silhouette of the castle hidden in the Moravian-Silesian landscape. A detailed view of Sovinec Castle and its cylindrical tower dominates the reverse side.
The collector's series presents a total of six castle stories.
